Cervical Traction Restores Hope

Cervical traction would never have been something I would have known about until I actually got a bad neck. And my back injury seemed to be relentless and hard to overcome.


I was young and naive and like many young adults, not fully aware of it. My grandmother would always hound me about sitting up straight in my chair so I would straighten up while she was looking but go right back to my hunched over position when she was not around. It just felt relaxed and comfortable that way. When you are young you don’t think of back problems happening until you are old and decrepit.

As I got into my 20’s my life revolved around collage and work so I was constantly busy. Then when I finished school and got my first job in my field I was still under the stress of learning to do things right at my job and prepare for a registration exam. After four to five  months on the job I started to notice it was getting harder for me to bend my neck because my muscles were so stiff. Then one morning I started getting a tingling sensation down my right arm when I moved my neck a certain way. I went to a doctor in a walk in clinic and he figured my muscles were pinching a nerve and suggested I do hot and cold compress on my tense muscles.

Doing this, I continued to do my regular routine and months went by, I wrote my registration exam and got a new job in a new city. After the move I noticed a bit worsening of my symptoms so I sought out a chiropractor that put me on a treatment plan for the next month or two. But after a couple weeks I still had the pain and it was starting to get debilitating so I took a freind’s advice to see her physiotherapist.

On the first visit he introduced me to IMS which stands for Intramuscular Stimulation. It’s a form of acupuncture for the purpose of releasing muscle tension and it worked beautifully. We noticed an increase in range of motion in my neck within a few weeks. He also gave me simple stretching routines to mobilize and stretch the area.

I continued this for about 3 months and saw great improvement but my tingling and muscle spasms in my arm was still frustrating to me so I looked into alternatives and found what was called cervical traction. I asked my physio about it and he said he had one I could try so I was more than excited. Finally after the first treatment I immediately felt a bit of relief. Within two months my symptoms had completely gone and the strength in my arm was almost completely restored.
