How Saunders Got Started

Features of the Saunders Cervical Traction Unit

The Saunders cervical traction device is a great place to start when learning about neck traction. It’s a well-designed device taking into account the angle that your head should be in while doing traction treatment on your neck.


The user lies on their back on any type of flat surface with their head strapped into the unit. Wedges under your head will then gently pull your head away from your body with the use of a hand-held pump. This pump has a gauge to show the amount of pressure applied.

How To Opperate The Unit

The user of the Saunders cervical traction device will find how easy it is for them to use it on their own without the help of physiotherapist or any other person for that matter. They simply put the device on a flat surface and lie down placing their head between two wedges that can then be adjusting with turning knobs.

A simple Velcro strap goes over your forehead just to keep everything in place. Then the user has a hand-held pump with a gauge on top that tells them the amount of pressure is being placed on their neck.  This pressure is easy to pump up and easy to release quickly and safely all well being fully controlled by the user.

The typical amount of time to spend on the traction device is about 10 to 20 minutes. It is recommended that your first couple uses start out very short, 5 to 10 minute sessions. Then 24 hours later depending on how you feel you can increase the amount of time and/or the amount of pressure.

Your control over the pump means you can chose sustained pressure for the entire treatment or intermittently release the pressure leaving it there for a few seconds then pumping it back up again. Repeating this throughout the 10 or 15 minutes while on the device is good practice to avoid any muscle spasms and to increase circulation to the cervical spine.

I want to share my personal struggle and the saving grace that cervical traction was for me because it was a long process to figure out what was causing my discomfort in the first place so that I could accually start proper treatment that would finnally give my life back.
I want to help in any little way I can to get people on the right track to the quickest recovery and actually back to normal functioning without surgery. The Saunders Cervical Traction later became not just one of my treatments but the key to full recovery and then prevention of reoccurrence. It took me what seemed like a lifetime to discover it but in the process I leaned of other great treatments such as intramuscular stimulation (IMS).


So this is basically my recovery story from neck pain and stiffness, with associated arm numbness, tingling, weakness and shooting pain. I later learned that this was called Radiculopathy pain down my left arm and in my case it was from a bulging disc in my cervical spine.


How My Story Starts

It was about April 2011 and I was meeting up with a friend to go ziplining and climbing. This was my first time and I will admit I was getting more and more terrified of the height as we went up. I slipped at one point and kind of jerked my body as I caught myself but was fine after.  It was then the next day I started to feel a shooting tingle down my left arm. I then started to notice that I could not bend my head forward without pain and my neck and shoulder was tight and getting stiffer. I found my range of motion was slightly reduced while the occasional tingling was distracting at work.


The first doctor I went to see advised me to put hot and cold compress on my neck as he figured it was a muscle in my neck pinching one of my nerves. But even with this simple self treatment weeks went by and it seemed to still linger. I was getting frustrated with having a hard time turning my head or bending over. Bending my head forward was harder to do and it would increase the shooting tingling down my arm.


Personally, this was the worst time for me to get distracted with a little pain. I was living away from home working on a practicum and preparing for a major registration exam in a couple of months. I had no health coverage and with my student wage and high living costs away from home I just figured I would postpone going to a masseuse or physiotherapist until I could afford it.


About 2 months went by and things were feeling worse. I was still thinking it was just stiff knotted muscles in my neck and shoulder that was causing the pain and stiffness. I thought the stress of preparing for my registration exam and the new job was making me more tense so I just needed some time to adjust and get comfortable with the new environment. But I was getting pushed to my limit when my arm started getting more painful and I was avoiding using it all together.  So I really had to do something about it because it was getting worse and not better. Sleeping was almost impossible, pain and muscle spasms were keeping me from getting a full nights rest.



My Quest To Get Answers

The next doctor I went to see advised me to see a physiotherapist she believed I had the symptoms of a bulging disc in my cervical spine just from my symptoms of radiating tingling and shooting pain down my arm. Because I was young they did not want to put me under radiation with a CT scan of my neck so this diagnosis was not confirmed quite yet.


My first visit with a physiotherapist just threw me off because she was treating more than one patient at a time and all she did was throw on some kind of electric muscle massaging device and left me there for 15 minutes. Then when I left I felt worse so I was turned off by physiotherapy and did not go back.


A friend recommended his Chiropractor who took an x-ray and told me there was some slight misalignment in the bones of my neck but nothing obvious showed. He found my gait was a bit off and said eventually I should get orthotic arch supports for my shoes. He then got me on a treatment plan of about 2 months of 2 treatment sessions a week and sent me home with some stretches to do.  I followed his plan as he gave me the best hope so far. Some of his manipulations and bone cracking seemed to relieve some of the discomfort initially. About 1 month in I was getting frustrated with the cost as my new medical plan did not cover Chiropractor 100% and I was not making a recovery like I hoped. Some of the stretches were seeming to even hurt and make things worse.  What was wrong with my neck?! Why can’t I get over this?!



Physiotherapy at its Best

Then I came across a person with a similar problem to mine that went to a Physiotherapist that was trained in Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS). She told me he had several designations and years of schooling so I had to meet him.


I found out that my new medical plan covered physiotherapy 100% so it was worth a try for sure. He had  a whole different treatment regime that was gentler and the stretches he gave me were almost opposite to the ones taught by the Chiropractor.  The physiotherapist was convinced it was a bulging disc in my cervical spine that was putting pressure on a nerve root in my neck and explained that any Chiropractic jerking or twisting of the injured area would make things worse because its not the bones but soft tissue that was damaged.


The treatments that I received from my new physiotherapist over the course of months was as follows:

      • Gentle stretching of the affected area (arm, shoulder, neck) with his hands.
      • Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS). A process similar to acupuncture but deeper into the muscle to take out knots and relax areas of stiffening.
      • Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises that progressed and changed over time.
      • Cervical traction with a large mechanical table in office


The first three treatments mentioned above is what he started me with and I later learned that it was preparing me for the final stage of using cervical traction.  Saunders Cervical Traction did not come into play until later because my physiotherapist was using a different treatment regime that for me was really helping and I was getting better.


After about 3 months of treatment I was making some good progress but not yet a full recovery. I was beginning to get scared that maybe we were missing the boat on my actual diagnosis and was fearful of finding out I had a tumor or something severe. I was even looking at surgery and going to meet up with a specialist to discuss the possibility because I wanted to be fully recovered. To give me peace of mind and rather than wait a year for it I paid $800 for an MRI scan that finally confirmed that I had a herniated disc in my neck rather than a growth or cancer of the spine. From that I learned that the X-ray I got before did not show the herniated disc because it is soft tissue and X-rays only display bone whereas MRI shows soft tissue changes.


Now that I saw the pictures and knew for sure what was causing the pain and stiffness I researched different treatment options like the inversion table where you hang upside down and tried it for a couple months but that did not seem to change anything. I asked my Physiotherapist about traction tables that I read about different Chiropractors having  it in their office. These big machines would pull your neck to relieve pressure on the disc and theoretically pull it back into place. They are really expensive treatments so I had to ask my physiotherapist about it first. He said he had something similar in his office and that I could also buy a smaller portable one for myself at home. He said he had mixed reviews with his own patients with it but that seems to be the case with any type of treatment. Some people will benefit and some find it’s not for them. He said I could try it out and so I did.



Saunders Cervical Traction Treatments

My physiotherapist treatments continued as they did and I continued to do my stretches and strengthening exercises that he taught me. The new thing now was the cervical traction in his office. He got me to lay down on the table and the machine would automatically pull my head away from my body and intermittently relax.  He started with gentle pull for 10 minutes and worked up to 20 minute sessions while gradually increasing the pressure. After the first treatment and subsequently there after it was like exponential recovery.  After about two weeks  and great reduction in my symptoms I decided to get the Saunders Cervical Traction home device like he recommended because I was at the point that I could save time and gas money if I did my treatments at home. I actually found the device on Amazon which saved me some money as my new medical plan did not cover the cost for it. It came quickly and I started using it just as my physiotherapist advised me. I found it the most relieving and relaxing treatment to do after a long day at work. Within about 2 months all my pain, numbness, tingling, and spasms were gone. The only thing left to work on was regaining full strength in my left arm. And my physiotherapist showed me simple ways to do that.


It was like the Saunders Cervical Traction treatment was the thing that got me over the final hump and I was relieved and overjoyed to get back to my normal activities and not have to go through sugary or suffer chronic pain for the rest of my life and live off pain killers to get through each day. I was young and there was no way I was going to give up and label myself as  a cripple or feel older than I was before my golden years. I knew that if I let this go it would just be depressing and a downward health spiral from there.


When I asked my Physiotherapist what would come of this bulging disc, he explained, it would gradually get more and more compressed causing the cartilage between the joints to wear down and the bone to rub against each other. I have firsthand experience of battling sciatica pain for over half a year before I found complete recovery. It was due to miss diagnosis and running into the wrong doctors for advice. It wasn't until I found the right physiotherapist that I found myself starting to recover but I reached a plateau and had to find something to fully recover. For me that was lumbar traction and it was truly my saving grace to finally be able to do the activities I love doing again.
